The Terminator is Being (Re)Animated on Netflix

Recently, Netflix announced that an animated entry in the Terminator franchise will be arriving on its platform sometime in the near future. This announcement was made along with a teaser trailer that doesn’t show anything, other than to announce that a Terminator animated series (simply named Terminator) is coming to Netflix soon.

The new animated series will be written by Mattson Tomlin and produced by anime studio Production I.G. Not much is known about the plot of the series, other than that it takes place in 1997 a few days before “Judgement Day”. How this fits into the other Terminator timelines (if any) remains to be seen.

I’ve been waiting for an update about this animation series for a while. It was first announced way back in early 2021, and news about this show had become so scarce since then that I assumed it did not make it past a pilot episode. Hollywood does have a habit of announcing projects that ultimately never see the light of day: for example, TV spin-offs have also been announced for Mimic (1997) and Dark City (1998), but both of those appear to have been shelved.

I’m hoping that by switching to an animated format, the new Terminator animated series can explore aspects of the franchise that the films never did. I’m still impressed with what The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV series did in just two seasons, so hopefully this will do the same (and maybe run for more than two seasons). I’m also curious to see what kind of style Production I.G will bring to the Terminator franchise. With cyberpunk anime series such as Ghost in the Shell and Psycho-Pass under its belt, this studio is great choice to continue a tech-centric franchise such as Terminator.

  1. Not so sure the studio is a good choice - they've got an established history of taking established entertainment brands and giving them "extreme makeovers" with mixed / disappointing results (He-Man, Castlevania, etc.). Stopped subscribing years ago and have zero desire to go back.

  2. Wow! speaking of terminator, I got its action figure collections from https://largerthanlifetoys.com/collections/horror-action-figures. It does really give me a real experience like those with terminator 3!
