HoloTats: Wearable AR Fun!

For the last few years, I've been keeping my eyes on the latest developments in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to see how companies are applying these technologies to pique consumer interest in these new technologies. Of the many applications I've seen, one that has just been released by Balti Virtual is something that I never would have expected: AR temporary tattoos, or "HoloTats".

Balti Virtual is an AR/VR development studio that's located in Baltimore, MD, and it launched an official website to promote its unique new AR product. HoloTats consist of a combination of removable tattoos and an app that can be downloaded for both mobile phones and tables. When a mobile device views the tattoo through the app, a 3D character emerges from the tattoo. Initial HoloTat selections include exotic and endangered animals, magical characters, and various vehicles. The app can also be used to take and share pictures of the AR characters.

Of course, HoloTats are perfect for kid-centric events such as birthday parties and school fairs. While I'm sure that this line will expand and diversify depending upon how well it is received, I'm personally hoping for selections of horror and sci-fi themed HoloTats. The possibilities are endless:

* Alien HoloTats that bear the Weyland-Yutani logo and can either wrap a facehugger around your head or launch a chestbuster out of your torso.

* HoloTats based on "Big Bug" movies like The Fly (which replace your head with that of a common household insect) and Mimic (which cause your face to peel away to reveal the visage of a genetically modified monster cockroach).

* Zombie-themed HoloTats that bear a biohazard symbol and instantly hemorrhage and rot whichever body part to which the HoloTat is attached.

Imagine an AR app that can make users look like this. The app would sell itself!
