SDCC 2018 Super7 Toy Preview: Planet of the Apes, Universal Monsters, and He-Man
It's the middle of summer, so that means that the annual San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) is around the corner. Here's a sneak peak at some of this year's SDCC toy exclusives from Super7 that have caught my attention (all pictures are provided courtesy of Super7):
Planet of the Apes: I previously posted about how Super7's ReAction figure line has been releasing new figures from the original Planet of the Apes saga (1968 - 1973). For SDCC '18, these figures will be getting their own Forbidden Zone playset, which consists of a molded plastic base and a cardboard backdrop that depicts the beached Statue of Liberty.
Super7 previously released another playset as an SDCC exclusive back in 2014: the Alien Egg Chamber playset, which also consisted of a molded plastic base and a cardboard backdrop. Neither of these play sets are cheap: the Egg Chamber set cost $100, while the Forbidden Zone set costs $75. It seems like a rip off to me; at least when Kenner did such low-quality play sets for its Star Wars line, it kept the prices reasonable. POTA fans would be better off just getting the figures and making their own Forbidden Zone play sets.
Universal Monsters: Somewhere out there, a Universal studio executive is still baffled over how the original Universal Monsters keep moving licensed merchandise in spite of the big-budget, CGI-overloaded remake of The Mummy flopping hard at the box office last summer. Case in point: Super7's exclusive SDCC set of four glow-in-the-dark ReAction figures based on the original Mummy, The Wolf Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Metaluna Mutant from This Island Earth. Each figure comes with a unique cardback that's ready to display alongside psychedelic black light posters from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Each figure will sell at SDCC for $15.
This is the third set of exclusive Universal Monster figures that Super7 has released for SDCC. The previous sets were the clear glow green set and the spirit glow blue set. Of these exclusives, the Creature is the only monster that appears in all three sets. Fun trivia fact: When Remco toys produced its own action figure line of Universal monsters back in the '70s and early ‘80s, it released glow-in-the-dark versions of each character in both the 9 inch and 3.75 inch figure sizes.
He-Man: Way back in 2005, a group called Slack Circus used footage from Filmation's Masters of the Universe cartoon to create a video where a not-so-manly He-Man (as his alter ego Prince Adam) sings "What's Up" by the 4 Non Blondes. Now, this unofficial version of He-Man is getting his own Laughing Prince Adam action figure, complete with a pink power sword and rainbow glitter packaging, for $35.
By the power of fabulous: Super7's Laughing Prince Adam action figure.
This version of He-Man doesn't just deserve an action figure--he deserves his own animated series, where the muscular crooner embarks on whimsical adventures filled with laughter, love, and the fabulous power of friendship. It would be like Mister Rogers' Neighborhood for pre-pubescent Frank Franzetta fans.
